This fragmentation delays critical care, contributes to high mortality from preventable diseases, wastes billions in resources annually through repeated diagnostics, and hinders national public health surveillance for government agencies. The challenge is building a trusted, interoperable infrastructure amid growing data privacy regulations while empowering patients and eliminating fraud.

Scope

MEDBLOCK is a blockchain-secured national Electronic Medical Records (EMR) infrastructure designed to unify Nigeria’s fragmented healthcare ecosystem through:

  • Patient-Owned Data: Private keys give patients complete control with consent required for any data access
  • Immutable Verification: Medical record hashes stored on blockchain with tamper-proof audit trails
  • FHIR Interoperability: Nationwide data exchange standard enabling seamless hospital-to-hospital and lab-to-clinic sharing
  • Smart Contract Claims: Automated insurance verification with fraud-proof claim processing under 5-minute settlement times
  • Real-Time Analytics: Government disease surveillance with anonymized health insights and outbreak detection

Cardano Integration

MEDBLOCK leverages a Hybrid On-Chain/Off-Chain Architecture:

  • Off-Chain: Encrypted medical records stored in cloud or hospital servers (privacy + scalability)
  • On-Chain: Only record hashes, timestamps, and access logs stored on Cardano blockchain (immutability + verification)
  • Smart Contracts: Handle consent management for data access and automate insurance claim verification
  • Result: Privacy preserved, trust guaranteed, costs minimized while creating a secure “health data superhighway” that connects patients, hospitals, HMOs, and government agencies through immutable verification, patient-controlled access via private keys, and smart contract automation that saves billions annually in fraud prevention.
